The Publishers Association (PA) launched the Publishing Declares pledge as an emergency response to the climate crisis.
The five-pronged pledge invites publishers to set sustainability targets across their operations and supply chains to achieve net zero carbon emissions as soon as possible, and by 2050 at the latest.
The pledge required a campaign logo, sign up website user experience design and social media content, all within a very short timeframe to launch in line with with the COP26 conference. To highlight the stark importance of the pledge, a minimalist but striking design was utilised resulting in more than 30 publishers signing up within a week, with signatories ranging from the big names (Penguin Random House, Hachette) to independents (And Other Stories, Oneworld) to the printer Clays. The pledge currently has 82 signatories.
